Firearms Deer Season Opens October 17: The Lowndes County Checklist

Every October somebody gets to the truck on opening morning and realizes the license expired, or the vest is at the other house, or nobody remembers whether the harvest record is on the phone. It is a bad way to start the best Saturday of the year. So here is the whole list in one place, checked against the 2026–27 regulations, with the Lowndes-specific parts — the CWD drop-off sites, Grand Bay WMA, the local processors — filled in.

When does firearms deer season open in Lowndes County in 2026?

Statewide firearms season opens Saturday, October 17, 2026, and runs either-sex through January 10, 2027 in Lowndes County. Before that, the 2026–27 table gives our zone an antlerless-only firearms weekend on October 3–4, then primitive weapons and youth firearms October 10–16. Lowndes is in Georgia DNR’s standard green zone, not the nine-county southwest zone.

The season limit is still 12 deer — no more than 10 antlerless and 2 antlered, and one of the two bucks must carry at least four points an inch or longer on one side, or a 15-inch outside spread. Legal hours are 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset. On October 17 the sun comes up in Valdosta at about 7:37 a.m. and sets about 6:59 p.m., so you are legal from roughly 7:07 a.m. to 7:29 p.m. The nine southwest counties with their own extended dates are Baker, Calhoun, Decatur, Early, Grady, Miller, Mitchell, Seminole and Thomas — Brooks and Lowndes are not among them. What license do you need to hunt deer with a gun in Georgia?

A Georgia resident 16 or older needs a Hunting License ($15 a year), a Big Game License ($25) and the free Harvest Record — $40 total, plus a $3 online fee. The $65 Sportsman’s License bundles hunting, big game, fishing and trout, so if you fish at all it is the better buy. The Harvest Record is free but it is not optional, and it is new every season starting March 1.

Buy at GoOutdoorsGeorgia.com, on the Outdoors GA app, at a retail license agent, or by phone at 1-800-366-2661. An electronic copy on your phone counts as possession. The exceptions people ask about most, straight from the DNR license page:

• Hunting your own land (or land owned by immediate family you live with): no Hunting or Big Game License required. You still need the free Harvest Record for deer.
• Kids 15 and under: no Hunting or Big Game License, but they must have their own free Harvest Record. The optional $15 Youth Sportsman’s License is a multi-year deal that runs to the 17th birthday.
• Seniors 65 and up born on or after July 1, 1952: $4 Senior Hunting License or $7 Senior Sportsman’s. Born before that date, the lifetime license is free.
• Hunter education is required for anyone born on or after January 1, 1961 before buying a season license. Ages 16–25 have to carry the card in the woods; over 25 you just have to have passed it. It is not required on your own land or a parent’s land, and a $5 one-day Apprentice License lets a first-timer hunt without the course. Under-16s do not need the course but must be under direct supervision — a licensed adult close enough to take the gun.

Do you have to take your deer to a check station?

No. Georgia does not run check stations for deer killed on private land. Instead, before you move the deer from where it fell, you record the date and county on your Harvest Record — on the paper copy, online, or in the Outdoors GA app. Then, within 24 hours, you report the deer through Georgia Game Check and write the confirmation number on your record.

There are three ways to report, per DNR’s Game Check page:

1. The Outdoors GA app (iPhone or Android) — the easiest, since your licenses are already in it.
2. GoOutdoorsGeorgia.com, under Georgia Game Check.
3. 1-800-366-2661, 24 hours a day.

The only time you check out physically is on a WMA or national wildlife refuge hunt that requires it — Grand Bay does (more below). Everywhere else, the phone is the check station. If you lose signal in the river bottoms, record the kill on the paper record and report it when you get back to coverage. Twenty-four hours is plenty of time; forgetting is the problem, not the deadline.

How much blaze orange is required in Georgia?

At least 500 square inches of daylight fluorescent orange or fluorescent blaze pink, worn above the waist, which may include a hat. It is required for anyone hunting deer during primitive weapons and firearms seasons — bowhunters included — and for hog hunters during those seasons. In Lowndes that means from the October 3–4 antlerless weekend onward.

The regulations word it as “at least 500 square inches of daylight fluorescent orange or fluorescent blaze pink above the waist (which may include a head covering).” The only exemptions are archery-only areas and archery-only WMA hunts. A full vest plus a cap is the standard answer; a hat alone is not. Buy the vest now rather than the week of the opener, when the racks get thin.

What gun is legal for deer in Georgia?

Centerfire rifles and handguns .22 caliber or larger with expanding bullets; shotguns 20 gauge or larger loaded with slugs or buckshot; muzzleloaders .30 caliber or larger; and air rifles of at least .30 caliber. A .22 rimfire is not legal for deer. Scopes are legal on muzzleloaders. Suppressors you legally own are legal to hunt with, but on private land you need the landowner’s permission for the suppressor as well as the hunt.

The practical version: the .243, .270, .308, .30-06 and 6.5 Creedmoor that most of this county hunts with are all fine, and so is a 20-gauge with slugs for a kid. What gets people in trouble is loaded full-metal-jacket range ammo left in a magazine — the “expanding” requirement is a real rule. Sight in before the weekend, not the morning of.

Where do you drop a deer head for a free CWD test in Lowndes County?

Three DNR self-serve freezers sit inside Lowndes County — at the Georgia Forestry Commission unit on GA-38 outside Valdosta, North Lowndes Hardware in Hahira, and K&K Deer Processing in Naylor — plus participating processors. All are free, all take the head with at least four inches of neck attached, and results for CWD Management Area deer come back in two to six weeks. DNR only calls you if the result is positive.

These come straight from DNR’s sampling-site map as of September 21, 2026. Freezers are head-only and unattended; processors and taxidermists take the whole deer during business hours.

Why bother? Because the numbers only mean something if hunters keep feeding them. As of June 2026, roughly 18 months after the January 2025 detection, close to 600 samples had come out of the four CWD Management Area counties — 285 from Berrien, 147 from Lowndes, 123 from Lanier and 43 from Atkinson — and DNR’s December 2025 update counted nine positives in the first 398. Charlie Killmaster, a deer biologist with Georgia DNR, told Georgia Outdoor News in June: “I am happy to report the tremendous support and cooperation from landowners, hunters, deer processors and taxidermists in the CWD management area.” GON, citing Killmaster, reported that more than one in five deer taken in DNR’s targeted cluster sampling around known positives tested positive, against about 2% in random sampling — which is exactly why they want your deer from wherever you hunt, not just near the hot spots.

Can you hunt Grand Bay WMA on opening weekend?

Yes. Grand Bay WMA’s firearms deer hunts run weekends only, starting October 17–18 and every Saturday–Sunday through January 9–10, with a primitive-weapons weekend October 10–11. It is 8,700 acres straddling the Lowndes–Lanier line, reached from Valdosta by U.S. 221 north eight miles, then left on Knights Academy Road for a mile and a half to the check station.

Three things set it apart from private land, per the 2026–27 WMA listing: you sign in for the hunt (online at GoOutdoorsGeorgia.com, available the day before), and harvested deer must be removed from the area whole — no field-dressing on the WMA, which in a CWD area means the head leaves with you and can go straight into a drop freezer. No ATVs or motorcycles. And the federal Moody Air Force Base tracts inside the WMA can close for military training without much notice, so call the area office at (912) 262-3173 before you drive out on a weekday. Your regular Hunting and Big Game Licenses cover WMA access; there is no separate WMA license.

The opening-weekend checklist

Run through this the Thursday before, not in the driveway Saturday morning.

1. Licenses on the phone. Hunting, Big Game and the 2026–27 Harvest Record in the Outdoors GA app — the March-1 rollover catches somebody every year. Kids need their own Harvest Record.
2. Hunter education card if you are 16–25.
3. 500 square inches of orange for everybody in the party, including the bowhunter and the buddy who is “just walking in.”
4. Permission for the property. Written permission is required if the land is posted, and required to hunt over bait anywhere. Keep a photo of it on your phone.
5. Sight-in with the ammunition you will hunt with. Confirm it is expanding, not FMJ.
6. Stand straps and harness. A summer of South Georgia humidity is hard on ratchet straps; replace anything you would not trust your kid on.
7. Ice. Mid-October highs here still run near 80°F. Two bags in the truck, and a plan for which processor is open Saturday afternoon.
8. The drop-freezer stop on your route home. Pick one from the table above before you leave.
9. The drive in. Opening morning means the most trucks of the year on dark county roads at the same hour deer are moving.
