This is the average T1-weighted MRI brain atlas (the same reference volume used across neuroimaging research), turned into a 3D surface. The scan's intensity values are grouped into a handful of tissue "sections," and the boundaries between them are contoured and auto-colored — so each colored shell roughly traces a different density of brain tissue.
